Rennie's Freendly Giant
14th July 2016
Academic, writer and co-founder of Itchy Coo, Susan Rennie, has come up with another great translation of a children’s classic. Susan, who has become well known for her Scots translations of Tintin, has now also produced a Scots version of the Roald Dahl classic The Big Friendly Giant – here called the Guid Freendly Giant. This version has been produced to mark the centenary of the birth of Roald Dahl and presented Rennie with challenges in trying to produce Scots equivalents for Dahl’s invented words, but children will love, we are sure, to read about the Girslegorbler, the Bluidsqueesher and the Slaistermaister! This work is a wonderful and fun way for children to absorb the richness of the Scots language.
The GFG is available in paperback at 168 pages, and is illustrated throughout by Quentin Blake (ISBN 978 1 78530 040 0). It is published by Black and White Publishing Ltd in Edinburgh at £6.99.
